The Low-down to Buying a Children’s Bike

When it comes to shopping for kids bikes things can fast become confusing. Kids bikes are sized differently to adult bikes and even the brands can be different to those in the adult market. And then there are the questions like; How much should I pay for a kids bike? What is the build quality like? Is it safe?

We’re here to help cut through the confusion, and provide the low-down on how to choose the best bicycle for your child.

Understand how kids bikes are sized

Children’s bike sizes are referenced by their wheel (tyre) size. This is completely different to adult bicycles that are generally measured by the size of the frame.

The typical wheel sizes for kids bikes are 12”, 16”, 18”, 20”, all the way up to 24.” The bigger the child, the bigger the wheels. The best way to know which size bike is appropriate for your child is to measure their inseam.

Measure your child’s inseam

The best way to fit a bike to a child is by measuring their inseam. A bike suggested for a 6 year old may fit one child at 5 and another at 7. Each kid is different, and each one deserves a bike that fits. The right size bike will help keep your child safe, and it will be comfortable to ride. They will also get the most enjoyment from their bike.

How to fit a kids bike

To measure your child’s inseam, grab a trusty tape measure, and a book. (You’ll also need a child for this step) 🙂 Have them stand against a wall, either barefoot or in socks. Have them hold the book between their legs, as close to their crotch as possible, and mark the wall at the top of the book. Then use your tape measure from the floor to the mark. That’s it! This measurement is your child’s inseam.

With this information in hand, it’s time to go bike shopping!

Why shouldn’t I buy my childs bike from.. [insert large retail chain here]

You really shouldn’t buy a cheap and nasty bike from your local shopping centre for a few reasons;

  • the frames are generally steel and the bike is exceptionally heavy
  • the parts on the bike are of a poor build quality and often break off or seize up

Why should I buy my kids bike from Cycology?
